This very moody nighttime picture is an illustration from the November/December, 2000 issue of Cicada, a literary magazine aimed at teenagers.  The story is called "Conversion", by Ramsey Campbell.
The axe in the foreground plays no part in the plot, but it sets the mood for the image.   The twisted stump, the leafless trees, the lonely figure all tell us that something eerie is happening here.
